Slope Finding Device

Slope Finding Device is a tool that facilitates the physical experience of slope. SF01 proposes a set of possible relationships - between the object and the floor, which are the two elements that compromise the work. The device is first constructed from a spline, and then split into a two-segment curve that results in a partial circle. The large, heavy, bent work consists of 13 sintered iron wheels, welded onto a 15 foot structurally rolled, square tube. Unlike a conventional tool, the device has an almost averse reaction to the ground, to the point to which it can not stay still. The floor usually appears unremarkable at first, but as it is used, worn, and accrues cracks overtime, it becomes a site that holds many different stories. SF01 encounters the floor as a record of remembered experience. As it rolls, Each scratch demonstrates the evidence of human occupancy. Witnessing this motion undoes the passive assumption that the ground is flat, and instead redirects our attention to the existing characteristics of the space itself.

SF01, or Slope Finding Device can be exhibited in any location, as long as the wheels are parallel to the floor.

In order to use the device, staff must first verify in field the highest point of elevation in the exhibition space, to determine the most significant location of slope.

The perpetual transformation of SF01 is a condition of its display.
