IMAGE ARTIFACTS

Influence and Study Records through Ink and Paint

Los Angeles, California
Type: Image

Material is usually assumed secondary to form and geometry - which is assumed as primary. The removal of graffiti from the generic facades of Los Angeles leave a record of city spaces through ink and paint, leaving an additive layer in its place. Photographs were collected from the internet and on skateboard rides through LA.  These images were then trained on a Neural Network Algorithm, where the machine began to see different qualities in the images of the graffiti swipes, re-seeing the existing context in a different way.

The question I am trying to grapple with through materiality is how do we deal with what we have so much of? I have been collecting a database of images, some of which I photographed when I go out to skateboard. The removal of graffiti from the generic facades of Los Angeles leave a record of city spaces through ink and paint, leaving an additive layer in its place.  Surfaces are coated with multicolored smears with an attitude towards its figuration.

Unlike the surfaces of other buildings which require maintenance every five or ten years, the post-occupancy life cycle of these interventions remains durable even as changes in the surface treatment of the building occur.
